This year, the St. John the Baptist scriptural study group will study the gospel of Mark. Starting in December most of our Sunday Gospel readings will come from Mark. If you would like to better understand the gospel readings for this upcoming liturgical year, you are invited to join us in our study of Mark. Our study of Mark will start Wednesday, September 23. The study will be done via Zoom online conferencing. Zoom enables you to participate with a PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet, or just a plain old phone. If we are ever allowed to meet in person, we will change to meeting together. We will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 7:30 - 9:00 pm. The study is 18 weeks long.
On Sunday, July 5th at 10:00 am we will host our first outdoor PUBLIC Mass in the schoolyard. Check-in begins at 9:30 am at the Kearney Street school gate. Please bring a chair to sit in and a face mask. Upon arrival, you will be screened for your temperature below 100.4˚F and asked to sanitize your hands. All restrooms will be locked, and for the solemnity of the Mass, the gate will be closed once Mass begins. Please read the Mass protocol on the registration page. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Masses continues until further notice. People who are 65 or older, immunocompromised, or in the at-risk category are advised to stay home and watch the livestream.
Atheism is on the rise. Skeptical thinkers attack belief in God as irrational or, even worse, dangerous. The so-called New Atheism has attracted millions of young people thanks to bestselling books such as The God Delusion and God Is Not Great. How should Christians respond? How can we turn the tide of secularism and draw people back to God? In The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters, Bishop Robert Barron reaches into our rich intellectual tradition to teach us how. Using the insights of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pope Benedict XVI, he uncovers a clear yet sophisticated understanding of what we mean by “God.” On Tuesday, June 9 our parish RCIA team will offer the Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters, program. We will show the series on the second and fourth Tuesdays of June, July, and August at 7:30 pm. Because of the Covid-19 restrictions, we will do this online using Zoom until we are able to meet as a group.
In an act of solidarity, the Catholic Bishops of California are asking all parishes to celebrate a Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice on June 9, 2020, the date of George Floyd’s funeral. Instead of a homily, priests have been asked to observe eight minutes and 46 seconds of silent prayer. That was the amount of time Mr. Floyd suffered his asphyxiation.
We want to thank our parishioners for their generous support of St. Johns during these tough times. In April, we actually showed an increase in donations over the previous months in 2020. Thank you so much. Let's keep it going. To donate please click on the green link above. - Bruce Hartman, Co-Chair Finance Council
People are asking me "Bishop, when are you going to reopen our churches for public Mass?" I have received many beautiful and respectful emails and letters from our parishioners expressing great longing to go to Mass and receive Our Lord in Holy Communion. One lady approached me in the Cathedral, when we reopened the doors for private prayer following a livestreamed Sunday Mass. Wearing a mask, she went down on her knees and begged me to receive Holy Communion. My answer: I will reopen the churches for Mass in our diocese when it is safe to do so. There are multiple ways that you can give your contribution to the parish. At St. Johns we have an EFT program and have a NEW Online Giving program through this website to accept gifts from the faithful. We are extremely grateful that even while our Masses are suspended, we continue to receive these contributions.
